Tips
Ensure you collect your calves in a covered trailer with bedding on the floor
Our calves are fed whole milk. If you plan transitioning your calves onto milk powder the recommendation is to move gradually: Start at 75%/25% whole milk/milk powder, then 50%/50%, 25%/75% and finally 100% milk powder - this process should take a few days to a week
Pips 8 C’s for Calf Rearing Success
Colostrum - Every calf must receive 3 litres of top quality colostrum on day 1
Care - Calves are babies, they must be treated kindly and gently
Cosiness - Warm, dry calves are much less prone to getting sick
Consistency - Feed calves the same type of milk, the same amount of milk and at the same time every day - make any changes slowly
Cleanliness - Keep your buckets, feeders and calf rearing utensils clean - top up bedding regularly (see Cosiness)
Crowding - Allow 1.5-2.5m2 of pen space per calf - calves do better when they have room to move around freely, explore and play
Cider Vinegar - 15ml per calf per day, preferably Organic Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with their milk - helps to acidify the milk and promote healthy gut flora
Communication - Really important if more than 1 person is rearing calves
Simply call Pip with your requirements and she’ll let you know when your calves are ready to collect
